Chile - Multiple UFO Update, New Analysis & Videos Posted

‘Bugs, Birds & Blurfos’ (Oh My…)

Two recent videos, one created and one located, appear to further cast massive doubts on the probability of the Chilean UFOs being anything extraordinary.. Here's a timeline (of sorts) providing a quick recap as well as trying to to place the newest videos into some sort of context:

24th February: Leslie Kean contacts Dr Richard Haines (Narcap) to inform him she was going to ‘break’ the story in the Huffington Post with the help of the CEFAA. (This knowledge was made public on 16th March, see below)

25th February: Gen. Bermúdez gives a lecture at the International UFO Conference revealing this and other CEFAA cases.

5th March: Openminds.tv Blogger, “Antonio Huneeus” posts an article titled, “UFO Disclosure Chilean Style” in which he breaks the story and expands on Gen. Bermúdez's  presentation  writing:
“An extraordinary daytime multiple video case showing a clear metallic-looking object during an important Chilean Air Force ceremony in 2010.”

[…]

Gen. Bermúdez showed the analysis done by the astronomers from CEFAA’s External Committee of Advisors, which established that the object was not a meteoroid, a comet, reentry of space junk, a bird or an airplane.”

Huneeus also states that he has included –courtesy of CEFAA- three images further adding about each respective image:

  1. Frame from the first video at the FACH Ceremony in El Bosque, Nov. 4, 2010, showing a clear image of the metallic looking object. (Credit: CEFAA).
  2. Frame from the second El Bosque video with the F5s showing the heat signature of both the FACH jets and the UFO. (Credit: CEFAA)
  3. Frame from the third El Bosque video showing the F16s and UFO. The official analysis indicated the speed of the UFO was eighteen times faster than the F16s. (Credit: CEFAA)

And closes with the words of Gen. Bermúdez:
“We have studied this case in different ways. First we gave it to the astronomers, who used their own software; second, we gave the film to the air force specialists (FACH’s Aerial Photogrammetric Service). Third, we did our own internal study; we also asked the opinion of Dr. [Richard] Haines and Bruce Maccabee. Maccabee agreed with our astronomers and Richard [Haines] said that there is an unknown aerial phenomenon.”

March 12th: Huffington Post writer Alejandro Rojas posted an article titled, “Video Baffles Chilean Government” which basically offers nothing new and essentially repeats the information and images from the earlier Openminds.tv post .

March 13th: Leslie Kean posts an article co-authored with Ralph Blumenthal (also at the Huffington Post website) titled, “UFO Caught On Tape Over Santiago Air Base” and in which she claims that CEFAA’s analysis resulted in:
“The stunning conclusion: The Chilean jets were being stalked by a UFO.

[…]

CEFAA officials collected seven videos of the El Bosque UFO taken from different vantage points. Bermúdez commissioned scientists from many disciplines, aeronautical experts, and air force and army photogrametric technicians to subject the videos to intense scrutiny. They all came to the same conclusions.”

[…]

Astronomer Luis Barrera from the Metropolitan University of Sciences in Chile, who has an asteroid named after him, was one of eight highly skeptical scientists who analyzed the footage. He was able to rule out a meteoroid, pieces of meteors or comets, space junk, a bird or an airplane.

15th March: After following the story since I first seen the OpenMInds.tv post I made a Blog post stating that what I was looking at was NO different to similar anomalies I’d seen in the past, i.e. all of them resembling small objects closer to the camera rather that the metres–wide objects which it was being alleged that analysis had showed.(Blog post available here).

16th March: UK Researcher Martin Shough asked Dr Richard Haines (NARCAP) about this event and Haines replies stating that the email may be made public, an excerpt of which follows:
“I managed to open and quantify three of the video files and submitted a confidential summary to CEFAA. This took place soon thereafter. However, it was made clear to me at that time that they (CEFAA) did not want this event to be publicized and so, under the terms of our agreement I just sat on it all. Not even Ted Roe knew of my work.

Time passed.

I recently learned from Leslie Kean that she had contacted CEFAA when she learned that Gen. Bermudez was coming to the USA to give a lecture and that this particular case would be featured. I was quite surprised. For some reason CEFAA had changed its mind.

Leslie K. wrote to me on 24 February 2012 informing me that she was going to break the story on the Huffington Post. Bottom line? My work has not seen the light of day nor been published by me.”

(Source: Email response to Martin Shough posted publicly at UFOUpdates.)

18th March: After personally contacting the astronomer Luis Barrera it transpired that he had never made the statements being attributed to him/his analysis, however he did confirm that he and several others had been analysing the video for over 12 months and had in fact concluded that it was a physical & as yet unidentified object.

I wrote words to this effect in an earlier post which is available here.

19th March: YouTube User HoaxKiller uploaded the following video:

HoaxKiller also wrote:
“After closely examining the videos provided by CEFAA, I have found that the objects pass in front of the hills in the background. I am not sure if they have noticed this, and if they have, I wonder why they didn't highlight it in their videos. The fact that they appear in front of the hills means the objects are fairly close. It also means that I can use the hills to help measure / estimate the maximum size and speed of the objects.

I also noticed what appears to be another object near the ground that is only visible for 3 consecutive frames for 100 milliseconds. That is the exact same speed that the other objects move every three frames. I believe the object is an insect, just like I believe the other objects are insects.”

19th March: Leslie Kean posts an ‘exclusive’ to the research section of her “UFOs On Record” webpage, the entry is post-dated to the 13th March and claims that she and Blumenthal ‘broke’ the story in the Huffington Post (i.e.13th March).

This ‘breaking news’ included is a 34-image slide show with one slide detailing the conclusions of Luis Barrera (in a Flash animation in Spanish) which is what had evidently been the source for earlier quotes by Barrera but as it's a  -Spanish- flash vid  you can't just copy & paste it but here's the clunky (automated) translation cleaned up a bit:

Comments:

1 - Not a meteoroid or asteroid debris entering the atmosphere.
2 - Not related pieces of Comet entering the atmosphere.
3 - Not space junk (the object has intentional movements).
4 - No plane or bird.
5 - The object made a hazardous flight maneuver against the falcons W-E-W.
6 - The object performs a flight maneuver at low altitude and high speed.
7 - The maneuver has an elliptical path (or loop), and perpendicular to the direction of aircraft flying falcons (S to N).
8 - The object shows light and shadow effects du on its surface, metallic-looking, low-reflection. THE object displays an ellipsoidal shape.
9 - The object shows slight signs of activity at the bottom.
10 - Earth observers fail to detect the object, although it passes over their heads, therefore the maneuver of the object is not accompanied by a sound wave front.
11 - The object moves to the E with an inclination - 25 degrees.

Also included were three downloadable video files of the three videos that had been released so far, these were purported to be “original” but all were sized at 640x480 and only 10 frames per second (fps).

http://ufosontherecord.com/research/

Apart from the obvious problem being that this means they are neither original nor accurate reproductions of the original, 10fps is also a big drop from the standard 24fps, if you want to see the massive difference between these then visit:

http://frames-per-second.appspot.com/why 10fps

Simply change one of the main animations to 10fps in the box at the top and you will instantly see the difference between what the standard is and what we were supplied with (10fps is bottom image).

I'm not suggesting that the experts analysed a video recorded at 10fps just that rather strangely this is what was made available for download so others could also analyse it, and even stranger was that the video was billed as being the "original". A Facebook user questioned Leslie Kean about this just recently and she was not only dismissive but it seems as if she was purposefully evasive. Or perhaps she just didn’t understand the implications of the question or the problems caused by releasing footage at such a low frame-rate.

March 20th: YouTube Video uploaded by HOAXKiller1 on 20 Mar 2012 that appeared to show one of the objects very near the photographers feet and possibly taking off from the ground just a couple of metres in front of his position:

This was then updated & the assertion reinforced by HoaxKiller with an animated image and then later with a video:
If you have trouble seeing the bug when it's near the ground then maybe this image will help:

And finally HoaxKiller updated a cropped & zoomed in video which showed beyond doubt that the object did actually originate from a few feet in front of the photographer:

This video is the ANALYSIS that proves the object is a bug. This video is NOT the video that claims it is a UFO.

If you still have trouble seeing it, try this video:

Well, I am pretty sure the video is self explanitory. This video proves that this object was just a flying insect. You will have to watch in HD for best results.

I was able to get my hands on the full version of the video, and using a bit of movement prediction I looked in the areas the bug might be flying from and sure enough there it was, so I highlighted it in the video. I was able to see some of these movements in previous videos but I wasn't certain it was the bug until now. This is much more clear.

I still have no doubts about all the other objects being insects.

23 March 2012: After much searching by myself and others, YouTube user, “StiverInMyPocket(posts on forums as “Stiver”) eventually located some footage from the ceremony that hadn’t been associated in any way with the earlier footage released by the CEFAA via Leslie Kean, the reason the footage and any written accounts of the event were so hard to find was as they are apparently posted exclusively on Spanish speaking websites.

Stiver posted the following comment along with the video:

Uploaded by stiverinmypocket on 23 Mar 2012:

This is a montage of clips from another video of the Air parade at the Air Force Academy in El Bosque in Santiago, 5 Nov, 2010. An article and the original video by William Olave, were found on the Chilean website Aviacion Total (here).

The article and the video were published on 5 Nov, 2010. The first sentence, translated in English confirms that this is the same event, on the same day, and the same place.

"Friday November 5 at a ceremony led by President Sebastián Piñera and the Minister of Defense Jaime Ravinet, was made the change of command in the Air Force of Chile."

Unfortunately the only footage I was able to locate was of an earlier air-show back in March of 2010, but guess what?

Yep, same insect-like ‘anomalies’ are evident throughout the entirety of the video!!

The two videos I used show the F-22 Raptor and the F-16, both filmed by separate photographers and both were filmed at La Bosque Air Base in March 2010 during an airshow. The anomalies are evident in every piece of footage of both events that I reviewed and the following are just a fraction of the many that are evident:

And finally here are some animations of the ones that are more easily visible without highlighting, they are of course massively slowed down for ease of viewing as they appear on the original footage as little more than flashes:

There is still no official reply from anyone who was involved with releasing the information, Leslie Kean however is occasionally posting updates to her Facebook page. The following were posted yesterday (24th March, 2012):

I understand Kean’s predicament but all of this analysis was performed a while back and would surely have resulted in mountains of paperwork and respective analysis’ so surely it shouldn’t be that hard to locate. Reading her Facebook page it seem as if even her supporters are starting to query the whereabouts of any of the earlier analysis.

NARCAP have confirmed that they performed analysis and concluded that out of the three videos they could access they all contained a physical unidentified object, Maccabee also supported the conclusions of the CEFAA (according to Openminds.TV). Plus CEFAA have had eight sceptical & specialist scientists analyse the footage for over a year and to date we have three 10 second clips (approx.) And as the clips appear to be heavily compressed video released purely for ‘analysis’ then it raises more questions than answers as there are many aspects related to the footage that still haven’t been cleared up and in my opinion these are the most basic and fundamental aspects such as:
  • Were the three videos included in the first -and only- release taken by the same cameraman?
  • Do these videos constitute three of the seven cameras that are supposed to have captured the object?
  • Has the exact same object been verified to have appeared simultaneously on more than one camera or is it presumed to be the same object?
  • If so and if the footage released represents “the best three” then how was this verification accomplished?
  • Can we see the originals in their original format?
  • Why are the released videos labelled as originals and yet have a frame-rate of only 10fps?
  • What type of camera did the footage come from?
  • What was the shutter speed and other settings involved with processing, etc. etc. etc.
Leslie Kean seems very sure of the findings of the experts and I must admit that if I hadn’t seen the footage and was basing an opinion on words & credentials alone then I’d have to agree with her. However as I’ve seen the footage released so far as well as many other independent clips showing almost identical ‘anomalies’ well, unfortunately I have great difficulty sharing her optimism.

Never mind though because as already evidenced Leslie won't let the opinion of a few nobody's asking a couple of questions deter her from her goals regardless of how much evidence is presented to support an opposing theory. Apparently choosing instead to label everyone who thinks it's a bug a, "Debunker" and proceeds to somehow perceive questions about the evidence as an 'insult' to those who have already analysed the footage?!

After debating & discussing the veracity of many UFO reports over the years with witnesses, agnostics, believers, sceptics and debunkers alike I find this kind of response from someone who is currently viewed as one of the more credible & level-headed ufologists a little disconcerting. Surely this kind of knee-jerk, defensive and antagonistic reaction to something as minor as an opposing viewpoint is both counter-productive and wholly unnecessary? I just think it would make more sense to at least attempt to address the concerns or at least have a look at evidence to the contrary and if you think it warrants it then perhaps act as a mediator between those asking the questions and those who performed the analysis.

But just dismissing everyone who proposes an alternative theory (a theory which is demonstrably derived directly from the evidence) is not just self-defeating but is also paradoxical for someone whose work almost exclusively focuses on revealing suppressed truths.

In fact I’ll be honest, the only reason I’ve followed this story so closely is because it has Leslie Kean’s name attached to it and so comes from a reputable journalist who isn’t into sensationalizing UFO stories that don’t (at the very least) warrant closer inspection. This may be why I was unusually disappointed with the data we’ve received so far, don’t get me wrong I didn’t expect to find absolute proof in the videos as unfortunately the UFO phenomenon doesn’t really work like that.

I did, however, expect a finished report of some description and especially when considering the sources are essentially CEFAA and Kean, both of whom are deemed as being reputable and credible within the ufological community, and to be honest I still don’t think this was an unrealistic expectation.
.
Anyway and for what it’s worth I’m hoping to be proved 100% wrong on this and I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing any kind of analysis that can refute the bug theory. Mainly because the way I see it is that the bug theory is THE theory that demands to be satisfactorily disproved by something more than an ‘appeal to authority’ before this case can really progress.

Perhaps then it can become a benchmark-case for all the right reasons?

So at the minute we have:
  • A video analysis that shows one of the objects taking off from the ground or at the very least -due to it being visible above the surface of the road- proves that it was considerably smaller than originally estimated.
  • A video from a completely independent cameraman who was at the same event but in a completely different location who also recorded many more of these or remarkably similar objects.
  • The video even captures an object in roughly the same place at the same time as one of the objects in the CEFAA footage but rather than authenticating the earlier footage instead it travels in completely the opposite direction thus invalidating the claim that (regardless of what it was) it was the same object being witnessed on multiple occasions.
  • Several videos (YouTube) from an air-show at the same airbase a few months earlier which show objects with very similar characteristics to those that remained unexplained after analysis.
Only time will tell I guess but whilst the fat lady may not be singing just yet, from where I'm sitting I'm sure I can hear her humming and she's starting to tap her foot.....

Leslie Kean: Chile UFO Videos Update (Heat & Infrared)

Leslie Kean: Chile UFO Videos Update (Heat & Infrared)

(Update 20th March) Leslie Kean’s website's research page has the three full length videos (as witnessed in the earlier video) available for download as well as a slideshow and other pertinent information: http://ufosontherecord.com/research/

This is an update for an earlier Blog post located here.

There has been a lot of discussion regarding the Chilean UFO video posted by Leslie Kean four days ago on the 13th March 2012. For all it wasn't seen at the time (November 4th or 5th tbc, 2010) the UFO(s) were recorded during an air parade at the Air Force Academy in El Bosque, Santiago. The parade was part of a ceremony that takes place every four years to celebrate the changing of the Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Air Force.

The footage was recently brought to light at the recent (21st) 2012 International UFO Congress by retired Chilean Air Force General Ricardo Bermúdez.

Gen. Bermúdez is the director of CEFAA (Committee of Studies of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena), which is part of DGAC, Chile's Civil Aviation Agency equivalent to the FAA. Gen. Bermúdez spoke at the Congress on Saturday, 25th of February (2012) and his presentation contained the analysis done by the astronomers from CEFAA's External Committee of Advisors, analysis which established that the object was not a meteoroid, a comet, reentry of space junk, a bird or an airplane.

OpenMinds.tv wrote about this on March 5th 2012 (stating that the original sighting was on November 4th 2010) and included a few screen-captures with what appeared to filtered images of the UFOs inset in the original image.

Screen captures from the videos:
Source: OpenMinds.tv

As can be seen above the text accompanying the image states that they are from three different videos as well as stating that the second image depicts a:
"Frame from the second El Bosque video with the F5s showing the heat signature of both the FACH jets and the UFO. (Credit: CEFAA)"

Then on the 12th March 2012 Huffington Post blogger, Alejandro Rojas included the screen-captures with no descriptive text (again stating that the original sighting was on November 4th 2010). Then the next day on the 13th March 2012, Leslie Kean co-authored a Blog post with Ralph Blumenthal, again for the Huffington Post in which they stated:

"One such case has just come to light in Chile, and was presented by government officials for the first time at a press conference on March 13.

[…]

It was a glorious, sunny morning on Nov. 5, 2010, when crowds gathered to celebrate the changing of the Air Force Command at El Bosque Air Base in Santiago."

As is evidenced above the assertion now is that it the information has just been presented for the first time on the same day the article was wrote, i.e. 13th March 2012, as well as the date of the original event has now changed from the 4th to the 5th November 2010. I assume it's referring to the fact that the video has just been released to Kean as it was neither exclusive nor its first outing as highlighted in the OpenMinds.tv article at the head of this page (dated 25th February 2012).

Kean & Blumenthal continue:

"The rounded top reflects the sun and appears metallic; the bottom is darker and flat, emitting some form of energy which is visible in photo analysis. Infrared studies show the entire object is radiating heat, just like the jets."

This and earlier allusions to such analysis fuelled much speculation specifically regarding the claims that photo-analysis could be used to determine either energy or a comparable heat signature (radiating or otherwise). Not least because the images that were apparently being referred to show that the hue around the aircraft was evenly distributed and was no different in colouration or size around the exhausts of the aircraft, this once again raised questions as to the methodology & scope of the techniques being referenced.

Kean & Blumenthal write:

Astronomer Luis Barrera from the Metropolitan University of Sciences in Chile, who has an asteroid named after him, was one of eight highly skeptical scientists who analyzed the footage. He was able to rule out a meteoroid, pieces of meteors or comets, space junk, a bird or an airplane.

"The object performed a risky flight maneuver in front of the Halcones from W-E-W, at low altitude and high speed," Barrera concluded. "It had intentional movements. It moved east with 25 degrees inclination, which is the same angle of spacecraft when entering the atmosphere."

Then there is a slide show at the foot of the page containing 19 images, the 18th image is again of what appears to be the heavily filtered object accompanied with the following text:

The object circled around the F5s as they passed above it. Note the similarity between this image of the object and the one in slide #4. The UFO then circled back to the hills. Astronomer Luis Barrera highlighted heat on top and in the band below during his analysis. The black area is some kind of energy, and the neutral blue represents solid mass, according to Barrera.
This has been the main bone of contention for those trying to follow the case as essentially it is alleged that by manipulating the images during photo-analysis that a heat signature, energy source and consistency of mass can be determined. This sounded highly implausible but as Kean & Blumenthal credited this to Luis Barrera I emailed him to see if he could confirm the accuracy of the claim, and if so then to expand on the technique employed.

However and admittedly as somewhat suspected it transpired that the statement was wildly inaccurate as Luis Barrera promptly replied with the following:

I have never concluded that "The black area is some kind of energy, and the neutral blue represents solid mass."

During the analysis of those videos, the main idea was the study of asymmetries in order to detect mass loss around the "object" (which is typically observed  in small bodies  falling to the earth).

On the other hand, such asymmetries can be used to compare it with the expected pattern of insect or birds flying in the field of view.

During a short email exchange Luis also said that:

On the other hand, such asymmetries (can be) were used to compare it with the expected pattern of insect or birds flying in the field of view. We have spent about one year in this case using different frames, where the shape of the "object" remain quite similar in the different videos, so that the hypothesis of birds,  bugs or insects were analyzed in detail.

Fortunately in some videos it is possible to observe birds, which showed the expected pattern of changing asymmetries due to the flap of the wings. But this is not the case of the target!!

As you can see by the above comment the analysis was a great deal more thorough than what was being suggested/assumed on various discussion forums, as well of course as apparently dismissing the bird theory in its entirety. This being accomplished by using previously identified examples of birds in flight (contained within the same videos) as a comparative tool.

I realised at this point that any further questions would perhaps be misconstrued as overstaying my welcome but as I was still unsure as to how the analysis actually functioned I hazarded one final question:

I always favoured the insect theory. Admittedly this is mainly as I've seen quite a bit of footage that bore more than a passing resemblance to screen-captures of the released video. Namely that the -out of focus- rapid motion of the translucent wings coupled with severe motion-blur often resembles a 'classic domed saucer' shape (with the wings creating the domed illusion).

Would the equipment you were using be sensitive enough to detect the fluctuations in the asymmetry of an insect wing analysed frame-by-frame at 30fps and also not being the (optimal) focal point which lay far beyond the target (if target was considerably closer than previously calculated)?

Or would the relative speed & close proximity of the insect in relation to the camera cause it to appear in alternate frames as more of a solid object?

However, and as expected I have received no reply, this is completely understandable and should in no way be regarded as being uncooperative because this was around 3:30am (this) Sunday morning UK time which translates to just after midnight on the Chilean clock!! So as such I am greatly appreciative of the time already afforded to me by Luis Barrera, and especially at such an unsociable hour as he is undoubtedly a very busy man.

Edit to add: Luis Barrera has literally just confirmed that *some* of the small fluctuations in asymmetry such as those of an insect wing would indeed register when employing this method of analysis.

Hopefully the above explanation will allay the fears of those following the case (myself included) who were concerned that the data being supplied was irreconcilable with our current understanding of what constitutes digital imagery analysis. It was also reassuring to read that Maccabee & Haines had been involved with the analytical process.

OpenMinds.tv quoted Gen. Bermúdez stating that:

First we gave it to the astronomers, who used their own software; second, we gave the film to the air force specialists (FACH's Aerial Photogrammetric Service). Third, we did our own internal study; we also asked the opinion of Dr. [Richard] Haines and Bruce Maccabee. Maccabee agreed with our astronomers and Richard [Haines] said that there is an unknown aerial phenomenon."
Gulf Breeze aside, I've generally found any analysis by Maccabee (an optical physicist & long-standing Ufologist/analyst) is fairly neutral & even-handed, plus it is also presented in an accessible format where possible so a lay-person can follow the logic and mathematical formulas involved.

And Haines' previous work for NARCAP is exemplary as is the impressive catalogue of research that NARCAP has made freely available at its website.

Finally and staying with NARCAP, Martin Shough is a well-respected UK UFO Researcher & an active research associate for NARCAP (specialising in Radar-cases). After learning of this multiple footage case Martin contacted Dr Richard Haines directly enquiring as to NARCAP's position and awareness of the footage in question.

The following was the reply which is reproduced here with the kind permission of Martin Shough.

Dear Martin

I received directly from CEFAA on 5 May 2010 five videos taken at the El Bosque AFB, Chile on 5 November 2010 with the confidential request for me to study them. I did so although I did not have the correct software for several.

I managed to open and quantify three of the video files and submitted a confidential summary to CEFAA.

My work has not seen the light of day nor been published by me.

Now to your chief point.

The film belongs to their Air Force as far as I know and whether or not CEFAA has full usage rights remains to be seen. I am contacting them about this at this time so stay tuned. Whether or not they will release everything remains to be seen. Another question I have asked them is whether their Air Force is planning any further analyses?

I hope that this background will be of some value. It need not be kept confidential now as far as I am concerned.

Sincerely,
Dick Haines

From this brief correspondence we see that Haines also states it occurred on the 5th November 2010 (rather than the 4th as was originally claimed) and I assume that when he says he received it on May 5th 2010 that he actually means 2011. Haines also independently verifies the existence of at least five separate videos as well as being surprised that after he had honoured the confidentiality request from CEFAA there was an abrupt turnaround:

"CEFAA had changed its mind.
Leslie K. wrote to me on 24 February 2012 informing me that she was going to break the story on the Huffington Post. Bottom line? My work has not seen the light of day nor been published by me."
The date that Kean contacted Haines was the 24th February and so is actually one day before the appearance of Gen. Bermúdez at the conference, which was 10 days before it was posted on OpenMinds.tv and a week afterwards fellow Huffington Post Blogger Alejandro Rojas pre-empted Kean post by less than 24 hours with Kean eventually posting her co-authored account on the 13th March 2012.

I find it puzzling that even though there is a close working relationship between the CEFAA & NARCAP there are no references to the earlier (complete) analysis of Haines other than to mention he confirmed that there was indeed an unidentified aerial phenomenon present in the footage he analyzed leading Haines to muse that his sanctioned work has never 'seen the light of day'.

If we follow Haines' advice and check out the NARCAP home page for further details we find the following release detailing the events of December 2010:

CEFAA-NARCAP - Joint Research and Publications
We are pleased to announce that NARCAP has signed an official research agreement with the UAP research team of Chile, CEFAA - The Committee for the Study of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena. Both organizations have recognized that we share common observations and concerns and that a formal research pact could be mutually beneficial. In mid-December 2010 the documents were signed by the Chilean Director General of the DGAC - Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil, General Jose Huepe and Director of CEFAA, General  Ricardo Bermudez, and by NARCAP Chief Scientist Dr. Richard Haines and NARCAP Executive Director Ted Roe.
CEFAA and NARCAP both seek to maintain high standards of research with the intent of  presenting the most reliable data possible on unidentifed aerial phenomena (UAP). The specific concern for aviation safety by NARCAP is recognized by CEFAA and was also in consideration as we prepared stipulations for the agreement. It is recognized that both organizations are concerned with presenting transparency and will publish all research when both organizations are in agreement.

Bearing this in mind then I can't imagine NARCAP is overly excited about this recent media furore as the organisation is renowned for refusing to participate in the media-circus and back in 2008 George Filer published an article by Mufon's David Twichell titled, "NARCAP Boss Snubs MUFON."

The article included correspondence from NARCAP's Ted Roe detailing why he wouldn't –and doesn't- participate in media interview requests:
"I tend to decline media interview requests as a rule. It is my opinion that the media and the study of UAP have gone separate directions. Whereas we take UAP seriously as a hazard to aviation, which is a position that is consistent with several international studies, the media consider the matter to be entertainment and filler that can be manipulated for their benefit with no respect for our image or mission. And they cant it all towards the alien/ETV (extra terrestrial visitation) discussion without respect for us or our work."

Leslie Kean: Experts Vouch for Chilean UFO Video

Leslie Kean: Experts Vouch for Chilean UFO Video
I’ve been watching this story gather momentum since it first broke and I purposefully held off commenting on the first images until more information became available, well now it has and judging by the attention it’s receiving on the internet it seems I’m the only one who’s massively disappointed on what has been posted so far. Basically the excitement centres around a short clip of what is for all intents & purposes a BLURFO (there, I said it!!) and allusions to scientific analysis of the incident.

Leslie Kean opened her article with, “Is this the case UFO skeptics have been dreading?”
Here’s the video in question and an excerpt from the article:

UFO Caught On Tape Over Santiago Air Base
CEFAA officials were able to collect seven videos of the El Bosque UFO taken from different vantage points. Bermúdez commissioned scientists from many disciplines, aeronautical experts, and Air Force and Army Photogrametric technicians to subject the videos to intense scrutiny. They all came to the same conclusions.

Each video included three different, mainly horizontal loops flown by the UFO within seconds of each other. The object made elliptical passes either near or around each of three sets of performing jets. It flew past the Halcones, F-5s and F-16s at speeds so fast it was not noticed by the pilots or anyone on the ground below.
It zooms towards each set of jets at about their height, circles around and zooms back out again. Pilots who were shown the trajectory of the object in the three flybys were amazed that this maneuver is characteristic of reconnaissance aircraft coming in for a quick look at others in the sky.
Astronomer Luis Barrera from the Metropolitan University of Sciences in Chile, with an asteroid to his name, was one of eight highly skeptical scientists who analyzed the footage. He was able to rule out a meteoroid, pieces of meteors or comets, space junk, a bird or an airplane.

"The object performed a risky flight maneuver in front of the Halcones from W-E-W, at low altitude and high speed.....It had intentional movements. It moved East with 25 degrees inclination, which is the same angle of spacecraft when entering the atmosphere."
Alberto Vergara, an expert in digital imaging, reported that:

"When we examine the whole scene frame by frame, we have been able to realize that it has, apparently, moved at a speed far superior to any flying object of known manufacture."
Bermúdez - in a recent email

"At this time, this incident cannot be scientifically explained.....As agreed by those who have studied the videos, we can affirm that there is an unidentified aerial object present. We do not know what it is or where it came from."

Source Huffington Post

It seems that no-one is asking the obvious question here and that’s namely what information is being withheld that proves this is anything other than a classic “Blurfo”?

Here’s the screen-capture that the Huffington Post (Kean) posted (red highlight) placed next to what is a confirmed BLURFO:

Now before I’m condemned for daring to question the veracity of the evidence Kean presents from the scientists I’m the first to admit that my opinion is based on a lossy YouTube video and so is merely an observation derived from the available data. If more data becomes available then I’ll be happy to re-evaluate and update my opinion accordingly, none of my beliefs are absolutes and ALL are subject to change should information become available that directly contradicts any –or all- of them. In short, I'm not saying that this is definitely a BLURFO. what I am saying is that the object in the video is behaving like known BLURFO's previously captured on video and no evidence has yet been presented to the contrary.

Perhaps a few consecutive frames could be supplied (original fps), but even if not then it still seems simple enough to resolve. Because since it has been alleged seven cameras captured the UFO independently then surely one of the ‘eight skeptical scientists’ or the ‘expert in digital imaging’ were able to triangulate the footage from separate cameras in order to evaluate the size of the UFO? Perhaps this wasn't possible which is fair enough, just explain why and if it was possible then present the evidence. Or at least attempt to prove that it’s not insects or birds so that we can all move forward, or just address this troubling aspect which at this point is surely an elephant in the room?

Just sayin'…..

UFO Passes In Front Of Moon, Really!?

UFO Passes In Front Of Moon, Really!?

Surely it wasn’t that slow a news day when KGW.com posted a video (to their website via submission) that alleged a UFO had been filmed passing in front of the moon, the accompanying text read:

UFO Moon
(Animation, so give it time).

LOCATION: West Salem, OR
DIRECTION: East
BY: Nick Gillaspy
EQUIPMENT: Canon PowerShot SX10IS (80x zoom) camera

@ 7:27PM on Thursday, March 8, 2012 I recorded this video of the Moon rising up from the horizon. 22secs. into the video an object is visibly passing between myself and the Moon, from left to right. It looks like a plane to me.

I want to share this experience with the world and to get some opinions on what you think it was . . . enjoy!
I’ll spare you the disappointment of viewing the video because -as well as the animation at the top of the page- here are a couple of screen captures (animated) played quicker which further reinforces the fact that it's merely an aeroplane (website URL signals end/restart of animation):

You can clearly see in the last couple of frames that it’s an aeroplane as you can even see both of its wings:

Anyhoo, if for some reason you want to see the video then please visit KGW.com.

However, my real reason for mentioning this though is because it reminded me of an earlier moon/UFO related story, it occured fairly recently and was a recorded “999” call to the emergency services to report a UFO which eventually turned out to be the moon!!

The police released it as a pre-emptive strike for would-be Halloween prank callers, the Telegraph wrote the following (October 26th 2011):

Bizarre 999 call from man who says he's seen a UFO over his house... but it turns out to be the moon

An emergency 999 caller summoned police after spotting a mysterious object hovering above his house only to find out it was the moon. The man made the call, not thought to be a prank, in a state of panic saying the object's 'lights were blazing'.

Whoops! An emergency 999 caller summoned police after spotting a mysterious object hovering above his house only to find out it was the moon The call was released by Hertfordshire Police today to remind callers not to block the emergency lines over the busy Hallowe'en weekend. The call was made earlier this month and was initially treated seriously by the force.

The caller, who rang police just after 8pm, is heard telling police he can see a mysterious flying object coming towards his house with lights blazing. He said he was in the Canterbury and Stevenage area of Hertfordshire. The call handler asked him if he could hear engine noises but he said he couldn't. The call handler spends several minutes writing up his description of the sighting and then says she will contact the local police team to see if they know anything about it.

Jason Baxter, assistant manager at the force communications room, said: 'While the caller here may not have been phoning out of malice, his call still tied up valuable police resources and time for something which was not an emergency. 'It also illustrates the kind of bogus call we might receive to 999, whether as a hoax or an inappropriate call.

Unfortunately the video has since been made private but I have the audio which I uploaded a while ago:

Inidentally I'm positive that I uploaded the audio ages ago but it certainly seems to be the same emergency call that is referred to.....

2012 Doomsday? Don’t Believe The Hype…

2012 Doomsday? Don’t Believe The Hype…

A friend recently brought something to my attention, Stephen Hamblin, a retired aeronautical engineering manager, posts on several internet forums some of which are related to astronomy, aeronautical topics & UFOs, in fact if you frequent any UFO-related forums then the chances are that you’ve already seen these posts.

They are to do with the ever increasing 2012 inspired scenarios of impending doom being vigorously promoted almost everywhere you look, whether this is the (real-world) mainstream-media or the internet they certainly appear to be gathering momentum. This is, I suspect, due in no small part to the History Channel and the plethora of shows it has dedicated to the topic.

2012 Hoax
He, who will not reason, is a bigot;
He, who cannot, is a fool;
And he, who dares not, is a slave.
(William Drummond)

However the most worrying aspect is that people are starting to listen to, and actually believe it, I’m not talking about its main proponents or their followers. I speak instead of the detrimental effect it is having on -some of- the younger generation. A quick look at the excellent website, “2012hoax.org” and it quickly becomes clear that the subject and the quasi-serious pseudoscientific way it is often presented makes it very difficult for those without any prior frame of reference to discern cynical, profit-driven entertainment from an honest, fact-driven presentation. Worse still this is leading to worry and in some cases despair as is evidenced by some of the comments posted at 2012hoax.org, an aspect which is also cited as being the inspiration for the video that Stephen has been posting, so here’s the video and an excerpt of the accompanying comment:

The Battle of Nibiru
For quite some time now I've been posting comments on the Facebook page of the excellent website 2012hoax.org. This is a site that was started by Bill Hudson - aka "astrogeek" - with the specific purpose of debunking the 2012 "Doomsday" nonsense because quite a few people, many of whom are children or teenagers are scared witless by this rubbish, even to the point of suicide in some cases. So Bill started the site in order to try to do something about it.

Since it started in January 2009 it has proved to be a great success, with many people visiting to get the scientific facts and many have thankfully been reassured as a result. The site has also attracted the support and visits of many well-known scientists, such as Brian Cox, Neil deGrasse Tyson and David Morrison, to mention just a few. As for the fictional planet Nibiru, this has often become tied in to the 2012 Doomsday predictions by the doom-peddlers and it is frequently discussed over on the website and on the Facebook page.
Now to the actual subject of this thread, "The Battle of Nibiru." In October last year Dr David Morrison of NASA uploaded the following video to Youtube, after he had received an e-mail from a 12 year-old girl saying she and her classmates were scared by it:

The entire 2012hoax.org website echoes this noble sentiment with the home page emphasising this with a chilling warning:
“Fear and ignorance can kill. Children are too gullible for these horrible rumors.”
Dr David Morrison, the person in the video, amongst many, many achievements is internationally known for his research on the solar system, he is the author of more than 155 technical papers and has published a dozen books, including the leading undergraduate college text in planetary science (for further details please visit 2012hoax.org).  After reading all of his credentials I’m sure you’ll agree that it makes him one of the most qualified people around to comment on the actual physical existence of Nibiru, as well of course as best placed to assess the validity of any evidence presented. Here’s another video by Dr Morrison that specifically addresses the 2012 doomsday theories:

There is no threat to earth in 2012. There is no danger. All of the talk about a doomsday is a big hoax perpetuated on the Internet and with people trying to make money. So please don't worry about it. Let me talk about some of the specific things. There has been a lot of talk about a "Planet-x", or a "Niburu" as a giant planet that's going to hit the earth or at least come very close in December 2012. The simple fact is Nibiru does not exist.

[...]

Again, all this 2012 talk is just a hoax. It's a fake. It's nothing you should worry about. I get questions from many people who are really scared, even some young people who have said they are contemplating suicide, this sort of thing. It's really sad. And the point of my talking to you now is just to explain to you that there is no problem there. And the many things you see on the Internet and Youtube where people claim that there is some horrible threat about to descend on us are not true. Don't worry about 2012, and enjoy 2013 when it comes.
(Dr David Morrison)

Morrison has been answering public questions at the NASA Astrobiology Institute on the, “Ask an Astrobiologist” page for several years, the excerpt that follows is from an excellent resource in that section titled, “Nibiru and Doomsday 2012: Questions and Answers”:

(20) If Nibiru is a hoax, why doesn’t NASA issue a denial? How can you permit these lies to circulate and frighten people? Why doesn’t the U.S. government do something about it!
If you go to the NASA home page, nasa.gov, you will see many stories that expose the Nibiru-2012 hoax. Try searching nasa.gov under “Nibiru” or “2012”. There is not much more that NASA can do. These hoaxes have nothing to do with NASA and are not based on NASA data, so we as an agency are not directly involved. But scientists, both within NASA and outside, recognize that this hoax with its effort to frighten people is a distraction from more important science concerns, such as global warming and loss of biological diversity. We worry about the effect of this fear on impressionable children. But we live in a country where there is freedom of speech, and that includes freedom to lie. You should be glad there are no censors. But if you will just use common sense I am sure you can recognize the lies. You can find a good summary of the scientific position on 2012 doomsday at http://2012hoax.org/.

I know the ‘truth’ is still regarded by some as quite a novel concept and regardless of what others want you to believe you it is NOT subjective, it simply ‘is’. This is essential to keep in mind where doomsday-fuelled conspiracy theories are concerned as once the myopic egocentricities are recognised and exposed for the shallow self-serving pomposities they inevitably are, hopefully they should start to lose their –already- limited appeal.

So the next time someone asks you about the 2012 ‘end times’ I trust you’ll know where to send them and who knows, eventually the doomsday prophecies may also relinquish the damaging hold they currently exert on popular culture but I for one am not holding my breath.

Until then, roll on 2013…..

2012 Hoax

Finding the occasional straw of truth awash in a great ocean of confusion and bamboozle requires intelligence, vigilance, dedication and courage. But if we don't practice these tough habits of thought, we cannot hope to solve the truly serious problems that face us - and we risk becoming a nation of suckers, up for grabs by the next charlatan who comes along.

Meteor Lights Up UK Sky (Sat 3rd March, 2012)

Meteor Lights Up UK Sky (Sat 3rd March, 2012)

Last night on Saturday 3rd March at approximately 21:45 a meteor flashed across the night sky in the UK, for all I witnessed it first-hand unfortunately I was unable to react fast enough to capture it on camera. However with this being the ‘information age’ many hundreds of people did capture it on camera and many more thousands either witnessed, tweeted or blogged about it as well as calling the emergency services to report it. In fact, much to the credit of the vast majority of witnesses who didn’t recognise it as a meteor and called the emergency services as the general consensus was that they were calling just in case they were witnessing an aircraft in trouble.

UFO-Blog.com Meteor Animation

While the reports were centered mainly around Scotland and the North/North-East reports also came in from as far South as Peterborough (DailyMail). And Adrian West, of Meteorwatch, said he had seen reports of sightings from “Scotland to Devon.

(Meteors are particles from space that burn up in a streak of light as they enter the Earth's atmosphere, whereas meteorites are larger objects that survive the trip and reach the surface of the Earth).
Meteors are commonly spotted in the skies above the UK but very rarely are they so close and seldom are they seen practically the length & breadth of the country. Also of note is the fact that practically every MSM website -and newspaper from what I’ve seen so far- has stayed away from using UFO in the headline or indeed the main article/s, the Telegraph did briefly mention a tongue-in-cheek Twitter comment made whilst the meteor was still burning up regarding an alien invasion but it was hardly the crux of the article.

Well, all except, ‘The Sun’ that is, who decided to run the story with the headline of, “'Fireball' in sky causes UFO fever” and let’s be honest, ‘The Sun’ barely qualifies as a comic let alone a reliable source of news…

The following is among the better YouTube videos that show the meteor:

The video was uploaded by YouTube user HATCHETHAS with the following comment:
“Large fireball captured with my meteor cam 3rd March 2012 9.40, camera is south east facing. Location is the North East of England.
Dr David Whitehouse, an author and astronomer, said:  The Kielder Observatory also reported the sighting of a "huge fireball" travelling from north to south over Northumberland at 9.41pm, tweeting that:

"Judging by its brightness, it may have have been large enough to survive and hit the ground but until people work out its trajectory we won't have any idea where it might have come down.

[...]

"(The) object was about the size of a fist and was probably the debris of a planet that never properly formed. There are tens of thousands of bits of rock and grains of sand orbiting between Mars and Jupiter. Some of it comes out of that orbit and some of it hits the Earth."

And the news reports are still coming in thick & fast page and look likely to continue as can be seen on the Google news page/s.
