Originally at MUFON’s inception in 1969 Allen Utke held the position of MUFON Director for a year (after the transition from the Midwestern UFO Network to Mutual UFO Network) then Walt Andrus took the reins for three decades finally stepping down from the position in 2000 when John Schuessler became MUFON’s international Director. Schuessler retired in 2006 and James Carrion stepped into the role, Carrion’s tenure lasted until early 2010 when his resignation was tendered amongst much controversy which centred mostly on MUFON’s partnership with Bigelow’s BAASS, a fact which although widely suspected was confirmed by Carrion through information revealed on his personal Blog almost a year later. Amongst much information that was posted there was an email that Carrion had sent to MUFON’s board of Directors just after he tendered his resignation, an excerpt of which stated:
“I can only conclude that BAASS is at someone else’s beck and call. The Board does not need to agree with me on this, which is why I am leaving the contract renewal response to the Board.”
“It was after this email exchange that the MUFON Board bypassed me as acting MUFON International Director and secretly engaged BAASS in renegotiating the MUFON-BAASS contract while purposely keeping me out of the loop.”

Carrion’s commentary was posted at the beginning of 2011 which was just after MUFON had publicly announced that seven of its State Directors were leaving their positions, well, in reality only three were leaving (at least one of whom -Clarkson- citing MUFON’s bureaucracy as the reason) as it quickly transpired that four were fired (Ken Cherry et al).
So even though MUFON’s newest International Director David MacDonald is only the sixth person to hold the position for over forty years he is also the third to do so in the last 24 months:
Allen Utke: 1969-1970
Walt Andrus: 1970-2000
John Schuessler: 2000-2006
James Carrion: 2006-2010
Clifford Clift: 2010-2012
David MacDonald: 2012-Current
Hopefully MacDonald can inject some much needed stability into the organisation which in turn could inspire confidence, or more importantly at least go some way towards repairing the trust of the MUFON members in its leadership.
I mean after all, as MUFON is comprised exclusively of volunteers something MUST be changed if for no other reason than to ensure that the recent sharp decline in membership numbers doesn’t continues unabated.

Clifford Clift Is Stepping Down as MUFON’s International Director
Clifford Clift, International Director of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), has announced he will be stepping down as International Director, effective January 31, 2012.
David MacDonald, member of MUFON's board of Directors and State Director for Kentucky will replace Clift as International Director (ID) February 1, 2012. Clift is stepping down as ID due to personal commitments and family health issues, which will require his full attention, saying that:
"MUFON needs a full time ID and he will not be able to provide full time leadership under these conditions. I know my limitations and the requirements of time MUFON needs to be successful. I can't be successful with both."
Clift would like to express his deep gratitude to MUFON subscribers/members for their commitment in seeing that MUFON achieves the fulfilment of its goals and thanks everyone for their continued support over the past two years before going on to assure:
"MUFON has come a long way in a positive direction and I'm excited to say that the Mutual UFO Network is in good hands with David. His level of dedication and his leadership skills will be an incredible benefit to our organization. David will be a very effective International Director for MUFON. David MacDonald is no stranger to MUFON and the organization's mission. David is currently on MUFON's Board of Directors, Assistant Director of Investigations, MUFON's Star Team Administrator, the conductor of testing for new Field Investigators and much more. As a business man, over the years David has had numerous successful businesses. Currently, he runs a school for Pilots and Aircraft Dispatchers. Additionally, he owns and runs Flamingo Air, a Charter Airline. "David MacDonald has excellent credentials within MUFON and the business world. David's business background and knowledge of the UFO phenomenon is very sound and successful. He brings much to the table as the new leader for MUFON."
When asked how David felt about taking over the position of MUFON's International Director, he replied:
"I'm excited about taking over the leadership role of MUFON and I'm looking forward to working with all the great people in the MUFON organization."
David will move MUFON International Headquarters to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he operates Global Airline Education Center and Campus. Being centrally located, the International Headquarters will be easily accessible to many more members. Cincinnati is within a 6 hour drive for 60% of the population of the United States. The location will have high visibility to pilots and many perspective new MUFON members in the aviation industry as well as increased exposure to the general public which will be a real benefit. MUFON will have room for office space, storage on site, and a walk-in merchandise store. We ask everyone to have patience during this transition period. Keep your eyes on the sky and let's all welcome Mr David MacDonald as MUFON's new International Director!
