Firstly, a little background, back in 2002 Rense.com posted the following:
Man Abducted In Brazil (11-29-2)
Hello Jeff....I would like to share a couple of photos of the traces found after an abduction took place in a farm house near the city of Campo Grande, about 1300 kilometers nothwest of Rio de Janeiro. The event was witnessed by 28 people present in the farm (I was there as well), who saw the big "disc of light" (maybe 50 meters in diameter) hover silently above the house about 100 meters high... then the disc shot down a blueish beam of light on the house and "abducted" a man who was lying on his bed. This was around 8:00 pm and when we broke in the bedroom, there was this intense ozone smell. We were all very amazed to have witnessed such a phenomena. The man who was abducted returned after 48 hours and had a lot to say about his experience (it was his 3rd abduction). Our group has been studying the UFO phenomena in this area for the past 6 years.
And here's an image of the alleged ‘abduction traces' as provided by the inimitable Royce Myers at the UFOWatchdog.com website (prior to the para-cast take over):
To cut a long hoax short back in 2003 Linda Moulton Howe (LMH) visited the man making the abduction claims, Urandir Fernandes de Oliveira, without asking or informing any of the Brazilian UFO community. LMH then proceeded to tout speculation as fact and apparently misrepresented the findings, or at best she pre-emptively presented the findings, but either way the original findings were completely and absolutely refuted by a 40-page in-depth infrared spectroscopy analysis report produced by veteran analytical chemist Phyliss A. Budinger ultimately showing that there was nothing unusual about the bedding.
A heated online debate then ensued between A. J. Gevaerd (renowned Brazilian UFOlogist) and LMH, the following is an excerpt from an, “An Open Letter To Linda Moulton Howe” originally posted on the 26th February 2003:
An Open Letter To Linda Moulton Howe
Linda, I am totally and deeply disappointed with the lack in your impartiality and professionalism towards the referred case. I am mostly sorry that you have decided to entirely ignore the truth and skip any kind of serious analysis of the real facts about the case. Instead of that, you have decided to totally support an obvious fake that everybody in Brazil knows so very well for 7 long years. I do wonder what motivates you to do it and certainly it has to be a very strong reason, that I'd rather not think about.
I am completely amazed to find out that you came to Brazil just a few weeks ago, that you landed in my hometown, Campo Grande, and you didn't even bother to call me or meet me, or with any other responsible UFO researcher in my country, to hear what we have to say about this particular case and to see what we have to show about it. You simply decided to come all the way from US to Campo Grande only and exclusively to listen to a well-known hoaxer, whose trajectory and activities in Ufology are completely rejected by the entire responsible media and serious UFO researchers of all ages in Brazil, instead of seeking the truth. You have decided to passionately support an evident fake, a repulsive scam perpetrated by a man that shames the Brazilian UFO Community, instead of listening to anyone else.
I have checked out your agenda and found that you will be speaking about this bogus case at several UFO conferences in the States.
So it is my responsibility to inform everyone that the case is a complete fake, one-hundred percent phony, and I will respectfully ask them to do what you should have done, which is to examine all the facts available. This is the reason for this open letter. All Brazilian UFO researchers can be consulted any time by anyone, as well as the media, for info about the referred case and others involving the same person. Jeff Rense still keeps in his website several of our letters and reports in English that are concerned to this matter.
Well, Linda, I am mostly sorry for that and I hope that some day, not too late, when you decide to check out the evidences that you are solemnly ignoring, you will realize the damage that you are causing. UFO researchers have been targets of hundreds of accusations that we fail in objectivity and in applying proper methods of research. Well, let me tell you that we, the Brazilian UFO researchers, as an amalgamated coalition, working relentlessly for the truth, have with much effort and difficulties prevented thousand of more people to be fooled by the man whose story you so devotedly support and promote at your website. Our work in our country is done. I hope someone does the same in the USA.
And the following is an excerpt from a reply (again by A. J. Gevaerd) to LMH's rebuttal to the above letter:
You speak about samples. Perhaps you could check out some samples that we have of the "akashical register plates" that thousand of fanatics and naive people are after, believing that Urandir got them from ETs to give as gifts to his selected ones (who pay). At last, you should know something about the many other ways to cheat people with fairy tales that he uses, just like the story you now support. What about the cure for cancer and AIDS? Or the promise of eternal life or resuscitation? Ah, and there is the profitable foreseeing of deaths to fool the deceaseds families. Oh, yes, Linda, it is all for sale at a reasonable price.
I am sorry however that I cannot buy a ticket for you to come down to Brazil and check it all by yourself. You should have done that the first time, when you had a chance. All it would take was a phone call. Now that you didn't, and you insist on supporting the bogus, I will definitely show the facts I have and let people decide. I have my team working day and night to have lots of stuff in English.
I really held you in high esteem. I am sorry that I cannot simply sit still and do nothing. As a journalist myself, as an editor of the only Brazilian UFO magazine for 20 years, and as someone entirely devoted to serious and responsible UFO research, I will do what I have to.
As an aside here's an excerpt from another incident again from a couple of years later (June 2005) involving LMH & Oliveira with once again Gevaerd being the person who is objecting, providing LMH with verifiable evidence and highlighting what can only really be described as incompetence:
To The World UFO Community - A PUBLIC PROTEST
Linda Moulton Howe again promotes a known UFO hoaxer who wants to benefit from someone else's hard work.
Instead of informing her readers appropriately, Linda Moulton Howe chose to interview one of the only people in the Brazilian UFO Community who had absolutely nothing to do with the campaign at all and who only had, at the last minute, jumped in the boat not as an invited guest, but only as a shameless opportunist seeking to benefit from somebody else's hard work. Yes, you guessed right that fellow is Urandir Fernandes de Oliveira.
Linda Moulton Howe's story on her website misleads her readers to believe that Urandir Fernandes de Oliveira was invited by the Brazilian military to the meeting that the UFO researchers had with them. Urandir Fernandes de Oliveira was never invited and he never took part in the campaign at all, as he is not recognized as a UFO researcher in Brazil, but seen as a nuisance to the legitimate Brazilian UFO community.
The UFOs: Freedom of Information Now campaign was launched in April 2004 as a genuine initiative done exclusively by the Brazilian Committee of UFO Researchers (CBU) with broad support from the entire Brazilian UFO Community. After 10 months of very hard work, last January the military finally acknowledged this movement. The spokesman for the military was Major Antonio Lorenzo and he contacted UFO researcher and Brazilian UFO Magazine editor A. J. Gevaerd, inviting him and the entire Committee for a visit to Brazilian Air Force installations, in Brasilia, de Federal Capital.
Urandir Fernandes de Oliveira, contrary to Linda Moulton Howe's story, was never contacted by the military and never invited. However, when he knew that the meeting was scheduled to May 20, he and a partner called the Brazilian Air Force department and demanded to be present at the gathering. As the Brazilian Air Force, as public department, cannot deny access to someone while open to someone else, he was then accepted to come, with a visible embarrassment for him and the members of the Committee.
Contrary to what Linda Moulton Howe believes or wants her readers to believe, Urandir Fernandes de Oliveira attended the meeting as an uninvited guest, much to the embarrassment of the Brazilian UFO community. He asked no questions to the military, took no notes, and made no remarks. He was not acknowledged at all. Urandir Fernandes de Oliveira did not attend any of the personal meetings with the military, and he did not analyze any documents.
All of which brings us full circle to the reason for this Blog post, which in case you'd forgotten was: “UFO Cult “Project Portal” Hoaxing Again!!”
The following email is reproduced with kind permission from Thiago Luiz Ticchetti.
The Project Portal Fraud Is Back!
About 15 years ago Brazilian UFO researchers were shocked with new sensationalistic stories coming from a UFO group called Project Portal, which soon were seen as inventions and lies, as such group as clearly identified as a UFO sect. It is known by everyone in Brazil that the group has a fanatic behavior much beyond any other known anywhere else in the world. The followers of this UFO sect believe in their guru 100% and take any single invented story as a concrete fact without questioning.
In the early 2000 Project Portal leader invented that a UFO conveniently crashed at their compound, located in a farm in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, 600 miles from Sao Paulo. Nothing could be more hilarious than the "evidences" they presented to support the extraordinary claim. Just a few months after that, they came up with another story and their leader, Urandir Fernandes de Oliveira, invented that he was abducted in his own bedroom by a beam of light, which included burn signals in a bed sheet and ceiling, all poorly staged to create a dramatic circumstance and attract more believers.
At that occasion, unexpectedly by the Brazilian UFO Community, US researcher Linda Moulton Howe came to Brazil to "evaluate" the case. While here, she contacted no UFO researcher (all could give her info about the sect and its leader), spoke to no member of the Brazilian media and yet she immediately supported that 'case', that now is generally known and even admitted by several of the sect followers as a staged fake.
*Edit* Links to Earthfiles removed as subscriptions are necessary, it also seems that LMH has finally wised up to the “WaybackMachine” and has edited her *Robot.txt* file to prevent access/archiving.
At that time, Brazilian UFO researcher A. J. Gevaerd, editor of the Brazilian UFO Magazine, had a serious argument with Linda Moulton Howe about it on the Net. He had been investigating Project Portal for years and found that every little piece of their long repertory of stories is nothing but poor inventions, some ridiculous. Including the faked UFO crash, the faked abduction supported by LMH and a few other stuff. He was contacted by her while she was still in the State and spent time explaining to her what the stories are all about.
Despite that, as Gevaerd tells, she came to Brazil without letting any of the local UFO researchers aware of that. Even Gevaerd, who informed her about the sect. And even despite the fact that he lived in the town where she landed, "just a few minutes from the airport", he told me, and could go see her as a courtesy visit, she did not contacted him at all. A. J. quit investigating and exposing the sect Project Portal and its leader Urandir Fernandes de Oliveira in 2004, after a second anonymous life threat he received, but others kept doing so and kept exposing the hoaxes. They are many.
Now, just recently, Project Portal had been in the media again in a series of TV programs claiming that now they have an "exclusive ET" in their compound, an alleged alien that came thousand of light years to visit the sect and apparently give his cosmic support to the sect activities. Yes, this is what they say, believe it or not. They named the alien "Bilu", a funny and popular name generally given to cats and dogs in Brazil. The TV crews could film the "exotic alien" and the footage was first aired and then analyzed by our best image forensic expert, a scientist from the University of Campinas always requested to solve serious crime cases. He completely destroyed the idea that the footage had an ET. And laughed about. "If that is a ET, then I am a ET too".
Ricardo Molina, whose expertise is worldwidely recognized, said what all Brazilian UFO researchers knew: the so called alien was nothing but one of Project Portal's employees using a helmet in the dark, faking his voice to look like an "adolescent alien", because the sect followers believe that Bilu is a teenager extraterrestrial. Yeah. The whole thing is absolutely outrageous and ridiculous, and Project Portal is nothing but deceiving people, and in the most absurd way. Take a look for yourselves.
Now, the man behind this thing, Urandir Fernandes de Oliveira, was the same that invented that he was abducted in 2002 and that a UFO conveniently crashed at his farm, where Project Portal compound is located and to where thousands of people go every year looking for healing and "energy" from aliens, of course, leaving there considerable sums of money. Urandir was the person so energically supported by LMH.
I just wanted you to know...
